Evaluation Overload: Why Teachers Need Training and Support, Too

Then he handed me a paper that I later learned was my evaluation form. All the boxes were marked “exceeds expectation.”

He looked at me. I looked back at him. I can hide a lot of emotions, but bewildered is hard to cover up.

“Sign your evaluation,” he said. “What are you waiting for? Am I missing something?”

Eight years would pass before I was observed through the district again. Through seeking out mentors and hard work, I became a decent teacher. I was never excellent. Still, every time, my evaluation had “exceeds expectation” checked on every box. I would sign and return it although no one had ever visited my class. In my 17 years of teaching, I was meaningfully evaluated just once.

Had a stroke:

Went on an airplane trip to Montreal
Was intimidated by weird, tough looking guy next me that started arguing with me about how far Chilliwack was from Vancouver. He told me he would smash my head through the airplane window. Sat rather quietly and still
Developed a blood clot
4 days later while sitting on the toilet that blood clot was pushed through the hole and into my brain
Felt like the worst drunk ever—the anti-drunk. Spinning, aphasia, falling into walls. I have never chosen to get really drunk again it is just way to close
I am better now—-not as healthy as a I should be but better.

I cant stand up. I have been throwing up with Norwalk all night as you are being born. Your mothers eyes now are filled with pain and fear..it is almost time. I see your hair I sit down and there you are.
